I think it comes down to - roofs are boring - putting holes, patches, moss ect. just breaks up the visual monotony of a long flat expanse - plus they are more interesting to paint can you imagine DF lawn tiles - all grass - no weeds, rocks, sticks, ferns or frogs - just grass as for the holes in th...

I do like how the newer buildings are mostly baseless, to set on whatever surface. The cottage has a grass earthen base edge surrounding the building and I'm thinking of removing it, but it's already painted. See grass below, also included interior for fun... . When I scored the two Stone Bridges, I also got two Mansions (with the spire) and I'm planning on putting in interior walls in one of them. Still in planning stages on that one though.
