Agreed, a light grey dusting (drybrush) would give it a dark, brooding, unused look with minimal effort. Very effective for a dungeon.

One thing that separates GW minis from other fantasy kit manufacturers are the options that come in a lot of kits, often they come with parts to make a different unit, ie crossbows instead of bows etc. Which gives you more options and bitz which are useful for mods and kit bashing. Agree that real life is and was more blocky than the fantasy worlds based on those eras. Many terrain companies create caricatures of RL buildings - looking at you TTW and HH ;) But it is the aesthetic that many like and it helps to give your table that fantasy feel.
