For painting the stones, pillars, etc. I use Blicks Masterstroke finest red sable filberts, size 1 or 2. If you buy five or more they drop dramatically in price.

Looks like there is some mold release still on the piece. Wash it first should take care of that. Personally, I do not wash them, two coats covers it every time, even with some residual mold release.
