Hi-Res Realm of the Ancient Photos

Post by Monte » Tue Dec 02, 2008 1:16 pm

I came to this thread to mention the lack of doors, and I see I'm not the only one to do so.

Since posting photos here doesn't cost anything but time, I'd love to put in a request to see these new pieces in action with existing DF product. MM doors or even MBS doors or Den of Evil arches would be nice, but also a set up where one set meets another (MM leading into RotA, for example). Basically, as I debate whether to get this set, I'd like to see if it's like buying something that will add to and complement my already very, very large collection or if it would be like an all-new thing.

Here's what I think I'll end up doing: take one full set and paint it close to the original design. I may not include the white grid, but certainly the colored tiles on the circle and something in the corners. I'll probably just dab some colors on the individual tiles and then give the whole thing a dark wash, to age the tiles and fill in the cracks. Then I'll take the large intersection pieces and do one as close as I can to the un-released intersection piece in green and blue -- the other I'll try out my gold-and-white idea. It could be a really great foyer or parlor, I think, to have this white and gold room. I'll probably do the tiles in white and gold as well -- mostly white, with a gold circle and maybe a few gold rays. The Sun Chamber.

I'm REALLY psyched for this set....

Thanks for the kind words, guys. I enjoy painting occasionally, but am always amazed by the detail work some folks are able to do.

Stefan, those step-by-steps are guaranteed to sell me sets. I'm intrigued by the possibility of customizing some patterns and if you can please be sure to include the brands/materials you prefer as well as others that may work (I only ask this after having botched jobs using different kinds of matte & primer, some of which worked much better than others).

Thanks!
Okay, I'm excited now.

I have a little painting ability, even if I'm quite slow, and might be able to pull it off if instructed well.

I think those are really nice paint jobs, mate; the base textures and terrain touches add so much to a figure, ad shows your devotion to detail.

I think you'll do great stuff on those mosaics and I can't wait to see them on the forums!

Wow.
In one fell swoop, my Christmas Want List is done!
I don't care when they get here, just knowing they are on the way will be gift enough!

I will be posting photo's of lots of mosaic designs from all over the world, and it will provide lots of inspiration for customizable designs...

Stefan, would you consider putting up a step by step "How-To" for doing these mosaic floors? It might be a hell of a lot of work, but thinking about this throughout the day I can see the opportunity in making my own mosaic designs. I'm just worried that I'd screw it up without the proper techniques and materials. If you could perhaps create a walkthrough guide for those interested in doing these floors and columns like the Gen Con set, I'd reconsider purchasing some of these. What do you say?

That a great suggestion. I promise to post some "how to" photo's showing step by step methods...as I'm thinking about it, I might do more than one, perhaps a more simple design as well...something easily mastered by novice painters, which you are not by the way...nice figures;)

My first game I will run will be the temple of Death. Each "tile" will be representing a skull. Nice.....

I'm actually quite startled by the attitude of the folks who are disappointed that all of the floor mosaics are not gorgeously full-color.

C-mon, fellows, rewire the inside of your heads. The drab floors are a FEATURE, not a bug.

Personally, I'm LOOKING FORWARD to painting the mosaics on my drab-floored pieces. I'll paint every square room with a different color pattern. That will be some detailed work, but seeing them after the brown wash and dullcote dries will be HUGELY satisfying. My set will then be unique, and my own handiwork will be part of it.
