Another comment about ROTA: looking over the set, and thinking about how I might customize my own approximation of the original scheme... I realize that there's a whole other paint approach possible, though I doubt I'll have the energy or time to do it. But someone who wanted to could paint the stones themselves white, or close to white, and then paint the spiral columns and the top "crowning" (including the sun faces etc.) gold. It would be a REALLY great elf ruin or El Dorado City of Gold type ruin. REALLY would look good, I think. But it would be a huge endeavour....

That would actually be VERY easy to do. Your talking about only 2 tones...a black or darkish wall that is then drybrushed with gold and a white floor that is then given a grey wash that would seep into the crevices...That is actually a great idea for anyone who likes Mayan type scenarios....

To each his (or her) own. I also loved the mosaics but this less ornate, and more affordable, scheme is MUCH more flexible from my point of view. It's easier to render additional colors rather than take a chance obscuring and possibly damaging the beautiful, more expensive ones.

I hope to order three sets but will have to see how much the bosses have appreciated my efforts over the last year !!!

The only thing I'm surprised about, and somewhat saddened by, is the lack of any particular doors or even arches to more enclose / define the spaces. Stefan, what are your plans for the future releases to this environ ? I think slide-in archways similar to the wall pieces would be fantastic !!

BTW, I love the little rotating secret door / medallion detail !!! These are the details that got me into DF in the first place (the individual Master Maze Wall with Secret Door was my first purchase ... to use as a diorama base for a miniature) !!!

Double doors are included in the next ROTA :)
Oh...and there is also a SUPER SWEET Ruined Entrance piece -- that is probably my favorite piece EVAR!

I agree a door would be nice, but I can see how this set works without one. I think it's a nicely "complete" set on its own, but it also opens the door for a ton of great expansions. The traditional DF expansions (large floor pieces, long wall pieces, stair elements) as well as some cool decorative elements (fountains, statues, columns, and of course doors).

I really hope this is a hit -- I'd love to see more. I only hope the sales aren't injured by people who feel spurned by the change in deco. (this is why companies don't show product until it's about to be released, sadly -- how many people will pass who might have purchased the set had they not seen the earlier shots?)

Jeff sais sales are great so far.....woohoo!

No worries, Stefan. I'll keep my ear/eye out for solutions and I'll take a look at the pieces in hand at the next convention. At Gen Con we discussed the cost vs. profit of producing the Sci-Fi Gamma set, so I definitely understand the problem (and I did wonder how you were going to be able to produce Realm of the Ancients). But I bought two of those Gamma sets just on their sheer beauty (and I don't even run a sci-fi game!).

Any chance the expansions to Realm of the Ancients may include painted mosaic tiles? Thought I'd ask anyway. :-)

Hi-Res Realm of the Ancient Photos

I understand that a set would have cost over $300 if done in the original scheme, but in my opinion it would have been worth it. The Realm of the Ancients pieces at Gen Con were absolutely breathtaking, the best work I've seen by Dwarven Forge ever (and I own a LOT of Dwarven Forge).

Unfortunately, in viewing the photos I'm completely heartbroken by the new look of Realm of the Ancients. The walls are neat, but it was the mosaic floors that blew me away and one of those floors for three sets is just not going to do it for me. Even if it were one detailed intersection per set it still wouldn't be quite enough, though it would be closer.

I'm very sad to see the results of what I had so fervently anticipated. I'm not sounding off to be a jerk or an overly critical message-board nerd, I'm just disappointed. I doubt I'll purchase any of these, which is kind of a shocker to me; if they really do look better in real life, I won't be able to see them until next summer, long after the expiry date for the intersection pieces I do like... which means I'd never be able to get them, which means I wouldn't buy the sets then either.

I think the only thing that could convince me would be:
- all the expansions done with the painted mosaic floors
or
- a $300 edition

I don't expect that to happen, but I'll keep my ear to the ground just in case.

I really do love Dwarven Forge, I'm just very sad about this particular set. :-(

I'm truly sorry man. I understand your feeling about the original design...I did like it. (It was my design of course) however, I suppose it was something I kind of went overboard on...like the Gladiator Arena...but I honestly believe that, in some ways, this can be a blessing in disguise, in that this design is more versatile in it's own way.....that being said, if you truly were prepared to pay $300 or more for the more detailed designs, perhaps there are miniature service painters out there who could provide such a service? They could even customize a design for you? Painting the floors would be easier than painting figures for an experienced miniature's painter...perhaps you can still get what you want, maybe even someone here on the boards would offer the service? Please don't despair, (I'm speaking to everyone who saw my orig. paints) I will be posting photo's of lots of mosaic designs from all over the world, and it will provide lots of inspiration for customizable designs...

Thanks for being honest. I hope my suggestion helps in some way, otherwise, I really apologize.
