Oh, and I looked it up -- the 1e art I had in mind was actually the cover art for the original D&D Basic Set, by Erol Otus. He did a lot of stuff in the early days, and his very fluid (and occasionally verging on awesomely gross and bubbly) style is instantly recognizable. I thought the Nolzur carrion crawler already looked very Otus-like, and the confrontation over its eggs struck me as an Otus-like image.

Oops, THESE are the larger monsters. Those were the arcade shots. I REALLY, really, REALLY like how those came out. I just think it's awesome to have a row of arches through which you get a smaller area that's partly circumscribed as a separate room, but also partly not.

Anyhoo -- larger monsters, including the gelatinous cube and Sir What Does He Expect Is Going to Happen Here, and the final layout where I tried something marginally more interesting with the lava tray and my new ledges. Pretty happy with how that came out.

Oh, and yeah, apologies for the repetitive pics. I just wanted to get good coverage, and you know, I kinda overdo things. A bit. ;)

So here's the bulk of the pics -- the big lava walkway, confronting some nasty looking GW knights, and the larger monsters.

Now, the first layout. Just a small series of rooms using the DoD secret door as an open arch because I really like those pieces as just regular doors. And then "assault on the lair of the green worm!" The design of this beastie is so classic, and with the Khri eggs it makes a cool old school 1e tableau, I thought.

Dungeons of Six Months Later

Post by Law » Sun May 19, 2019 7:16 am

So I picked up some more stuff from the restock and decided to take some pictures. These aren't my favorite layouts, in fact some of them are outright basic and really just a way to throw together little mise en scene ideas I had (i.e. my main goal was to get a photo of a detail in the layout, not to have a full interesting layout).

The things I was going for (and this is kinda obvious from the pics):
I wanted to do an arcade, now that I have the arched secret door. I really love the fact that we can finally make arcades with DF - it's still not perfect, because a doorway without an insert is still a doorway without an insert, and the slot at the top kinda breaks the illusion. Maybe if people like these pics we can petition DF to make some arches for us. (Yes, I could Oldent one by just cutting the brick out from a regular wall, but I don't want to do that.)(Yes, I just made Oldent into a verb, but I think he'd approve of its use here. ;) )

I also wanted to do something with my lava tray, which was one of the last pieces I picked up in the first shipments of DoD. By the time it came, I was getting exhausted from setting up elaborate layouts and I didn't have any real ideas for it. I really wanted to see lava in caverns, and I figured I'd wait for KS6 to use it. But then time passed and I got my second wind and with the restock, the time seemed right to use the lava tray. (Anyone who remembers my old pics will recognize that I didn't have any new ideas, really -- I used it the way I used the acid tray in the past, which is neat and all, but I do wish I could think of something else for it.)

I wanted to make a large layout so I could showcase miniatures which really need room to shine -- the gelatinous cube (which I filled with resin years ago and has since yellowed with age), the beholder, the giant. Miniatures which are taller than DF walls need large rooms and layouts to photograph well, IMO, because if the layout isn't deep or tall enough behind them, you just get a lot of air above the layout in a photo and it's dull. I'm still not 100% satisfied with what I was able to capture (particularly with the giant) but it's a start. Giants (and dragons) need cities and castles to shine, I think.

Finally, I just wanted to include some photos of some recent Nolzur minis I've painted. These aren't my best work -- they're harder to paint than metal minis, or even GW plastics, but I also fully recognize that better painters than I could do a lot more with them. They're a little less blobby and ill-defined than most prepainted minis, but mostly I like them because my best Reaper figures have been featured in most of my photos thus far and I was getting sick of always seeing the same adventurers. ;) So now -- enter the Green Team! And, er, also the Red Team. And a very surprised thief who will now recognize the need to confirm a treasure chest isn't a mimic. Also a cool mirror which I used a shiny silver paper from AC Moore to make into an actual mirror.

So, first, the overhead shots. I'm not crazy about these, but they let you know what I built and give context for the detail shots.
