I've had felt on my older 5x10 fly table since 1992. I've had to replace it once- and that was for wear, not stains. And I've had about 15 kids, starting at age 12, playing RPG around that table for 9 years - as well as regular wargames.
Mine was a home-made table that we put felt cloth on and it did not work well at all, so I assume a more professionally done version would be better.

My table was 'home made' - a 5x10 sheet of plywood. But we stretched the felt on slightly and thumb-tacked it in place.

Do NOT glue the felt down.

I'd vote for felt or some super thin neoprene (0.5mm to 1mm thick) if you can find it.
This where I was thinking of ultimately going...but I need to see if i can source it locally...
Until then I will check out dome felt as well

thank you all for your comments, I appreciate them

Cheers
Matt

Warning, felt is very, very, very hard to clean without damaging it. Knowing gamers, who eat and drink at the table, this tends to be a problem.

I'd vote for felt or some super thin neoprene (0.5mm to 1mm thick) if you can find it. The latter is very grippy.

The old resin DF sets used to have felt on the bottom, and they stay where you put them.

Felt. Some shade of green felt. BUT...you need to stretch it a bit. On my fly boards, its permanently fastened. My trevelling kit for cons, I got the large plastic clamps and use those tho hold it to a table.

To me, any neoprene/mouse pad gaming mats are great. Non-slip, dice bouncing mats.

Even something as simple as a tablecloth will help a lot.

Felt is good. You can buy it cheaply and in various colors to match your builds. Just go to your local fabric store and they should have a good variety.
Another option is to buy a quality gaming mat. I bought mine from GameMatz. It has a felt like feel to it. https://www.gamematz.com/dungeon-floor- ... aming-mat/
