Trouble matching terrain to published maps...

I am running a group through the D&D 5e starter set scenarios "The lost mines of Phandelver". I tried to put together a build that matched the map for the "redbrand hideout". Here is the map:

I had a really hard time with 5' corridors and short stairs. It took me hours to set this map up. It seems to me that DF stuff is great to make your own builds, but trying to match to maps created without DF in mind are always going to be difficult to recreate perfectly.
