To play devil's advocate to your devils advocate, I doubt many kids are inspired and thrilled to play an RPG set in a hamburger kingdom.
I know mine wouldn't, but seeing what interests some adults might make a kid RPG set in a hamburger kingdom almost Shakespearian. ;)
Fair point!

I have only ever watched four episodes of Critical Role but I already considered it part business/part hobby and not just hobby.
Of course it has always been a business, it was bankrolled by Felicia Day and the Geek & Sundry channel. But the CR cast always said from day one that it was about the game and the gaming community, and if they could not keep things in that spirit they'd prefer not to do it.

It's their business to do with as they please, but I think this was a misstep. They are getting a pretty large backlash from fans on Twitter, and I think some worry it's a prelude to the show becoming more about making money. The reason it has grown so quickly and made so much money is the dedication to the community and the integrity of the CR brand.

As I said, Matt seemed pretty uncomfortable with it, so I think on some level they might feel that way too.
I wonder how CR got roped into it if Matt was so visibly uncomfortable?... I'll have to watch the episode to see for myself Matt's discomfort. I'd agree that it seems like a misstep from what I understand about how they handle their brand.

CR has donated all the money from the sponsorship to Farmworker Justice, which I think was a classy and smart response.
Agreed.

I agree I never minded CR selling their goods on the show. Hell I have bought many things from them and backed their KS. To me the stuff they sold was a way to pay for the show. I bought the stuff because I liked the show and felt like I should show support and buy some stuff to help them out. The sponsors they have on the show are at least game related. But the Wendy's thing was the shark jump for me. We will see where they go from there now.

To play devils advocate, a Wendy's ad campaign may be a vehicle for some kids to actually get to play RPGs verses just watching them or knowing about them from watching Stranger Things.

Watching D&D on Stranger Things would be more interesting and inspiring to kids than watching hamburger porn RPGs on Twitch, IMO.

I want to hate this. I think the rpg renaissance may have just jumped the shark.

On the flip-side a whole lot of fantasy artwork was commissioned and folks got paid to draw, game designers got paid to do what they love... there are a ton of rpgs out there, many of them are forgettable - whats one more if it keeps some folks earning some money ???
Yeah that's all cool, and I LOVE that people make money in the hobby.

However, at some point it starts to become like the obvious product placement in TV shows and movies these days. There are ways to leverage the hobby that don't necessitate things like:

"Quick Bob, let's get after the bad guy in my 2019 Ford F-150! There's no way he'll escape us with this truck's best-in-class standard four wheel drive and the optional turbocharged 310 horsepower EcoBoost engine with variable wastegate technology!"
I have only ever watched four episodes of Critical Role but I already considered it part business/part hobby and not just hobby.

And the above scenario is just silly it would be a Dodge Ram Elemental Airship in Eberron. ;)
