The WizKids boat definitely looks cool and for sure tempting.

We currently are using these which are pretty darn cool in there own, we have those Red one, Skeleton one and 2 of the Black ones, they made 2 versions, one battle worn and one not. The silly toy canons are completely optional, looks way better without them of course.

Some people have done some amazing "realism" conversions of these but that's a bit beyond our dedication level! :)

What! and ruin all that aesthetic design with a cheap bit of wood and a glued on magnet!?
Good idea :)
Dowels can be easily painted and tarted up... ;)

would be a nice touch if you can just have the mast stump (a la Dreadhollow) so you can easily gameplay around it without fouling the mast and sails.
Easy - get a short piece of wooden dowel approximately the same diameter as the mast, and put a magnet in the bottom. Done.

I do wonder how well the masts will stay in place with such a high center of gravity once you load them up with sails and minis...

Those will need to be some strong magnets.
The masts and sails look to be light hollow plastic, not quite the heft of dwarvenite, so confident that they would hold up.

Just don't knock them - would be a nice touch if you can just have the mast stump (a la Dreadhollow) so you can easily gameplay around it without fouling the mast and sails.
