I would be all for this idea. However, something to keep in mind is the "loss" of money skimmed off the top by both Kickstarter and Amazon. If I recall correctly, between the two of them a small Kickstarter will lose up to 15% of the funds donated, while on a large one about 10% of the funds are taken by those two entities.

Why not kickstarter regular Dwarven Forge as well?

Just musing to myself mostly, but I saw Stefan and Jeff post about how expensive it is to mold and produce DF sets so it becomes a significant financial risk to have large amounts of stock sitting around. This of course leads to many sets being out of stock.

What about running periodic kickstarter campaigns for different regular line sets? If you get enough money pledged then you go ahead and produce the set -- if not, then no loss. I assume a kickstarter pledge is just canceled if the goal isn't met?

You could even do it with prototypes of lines you aren't sure are going to sell well. Like a sci-fi expansion (nudge, nudge) or similar. I'd rather pledge for a sci-fi set and have it not make the goal (at least I tried and I can rest in the knowledge there weren't enough sci-fi RPGers around to make it happen) than have it never even be a possibility.

Anyway, just trying to think outside the box.
