Great job, Elye! The best paint application for the lava tiles I've seen. They look fantastic!!!

Those are most impressive!
You achieved your goal of hot and hotter spots... I too like the way you started with normal cavern colors at the top. Very nice.

It appears you used the standard Pokorny Paints for the tops of the cavern walls... I see a couple of Reaper bottles but I don't recognize the other ones... What colors did you use?

Thanks!

Well done sir! I really like that the tops and part of the walls are painted normal cavern colors.

Lava Caverns (Finally) Painted

Post by GriffinTamer » Tue Jan 12, 2016 8:58 pm

Hi friends,

So, one of my New Year's resolutions was to finally get my lava caverns painted before my City Builder sets arrived. (I finished most of my regular Caverns in intermittent sessions over the past year.) Surprisingly, I actually managed to succeed.

I didn't do a huge amount-- just one Lava Caverns set and roughly one base set plus add-ons-- but painting lava is considerably more time consuming than regular caverns. Unlike the standard caverns, where you can be pretty devil-may-care about how you toss on the paint and still end up with something looking respectable, here a little precision definitely makes a huge difference. And a nice bunch of lava tiles feels especially rewarding because they're so different from everything else… after acres of dungeon gray, that ruddy glow seems downright cheery.

Without further ado--

Here's the tiles just lined up (along with the paints I used). I took some of these photos with a flash to eliminate the heavier shadows, and wow! the color really pops. In reality they don't look quite this bright-- I wanted my lava on the slightly "cool" side (relatively speaking), so one could plausibly imagine characters passing through these caves without instantly frying to a crisp-- but this shows off the color variety nicely:

Here's a somewhat closer look at some of the pieces:

And here are a couple shots showing an example layout from two angles:

I made a point of varying the "heat" of each piece, both to add variety, and so I could create hotter and cooler areas within the lava caves.

Now I need to find a reason to send my players into the hot zone…
