Depending on how much you want to put into inserts, you could possibly do a couple variations with attached furniture to avoid the issue you mentioned later about furniture half on and half off. Maybe a bed or a desk? Another thought is to do one textured as a rug, either traditional or animal skin. Very nice work so far though, I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your stuff down the road!

We so need a line of these as I have more hole floors than I know what to do with when I'd prefer more simple floors (no holes/doors). :)

Oh, and I've found that cork sheets are working really well for inserts. It's much easier to cut, stack and glue, and they can even be sanded to get a near perfect fit.

Edit: I should add that I'm still working on the insert. The one problem with a lip is that with the raised surface it's harder to have something like a long piece of furniture sitting on half of the insert and half of the floor. It all depends on how well I can get the insert to wedge itself in, I guess.

I am thinking of using some basswood or hardwood cut to fit opening, but a 1/4" shallow in height to allow for GS or sculpy surface.
It actually has a slight lip. Inserts are problematic if the hole is not configured to accept an insert. I figured there's no point trying to make a piece that's as thick as the floor since it'd have to be shoehorned all the way into the hole and there'll be slight variations from one floor piece to the next - very little variation, but still...

So, as far as I've thought it through, doing it as I've done saves on material, saves on damaging the insert and the floor by trying to shoehorn it into the full depth of the hole, and serves the purpose of filling the hole. As well, the thinness will also help since it'll be more flexible than a 3/8" thick piece. The lip does make it sit very slightly higher than the rest of the floor, but there's virtually no aesthetic detriment (YMMV).
