Thanks all.

No on the magnets, these are all glued to round plastic bases. Clear bases would be most adaptable, but I’m always afraid of breaking legs when cutting off a metal base.

More testing - this time with bricks.

These are looking great! The rock especially is a nice match.

I haven't done hardly any basing myself yet. Is there any chance of making them swappable?
Typically you have the mini firmly attached to the base, but I could see someone putting a magnet in the mini's base between the feet and having the round base have another magnet or a metal piece in the center. I'm not sure how it would work but it's an idea.

Another idea is just clear bases.

Excellent idea. I agree, the rock really pops, and I have not seen that style of base before. Well done!!!

Themed mini basing to match DF tiles

Post by pacarat » Thu Mar 07, 2019 12:56 pm

Trying to “match” my paint scheme, and DF sculpting style of the city/castle themed tiles on my minis’ bases. I intend to have interior building/tavern, street/alley, and farm/field/rural schemes.

Rural is a no brainer - standard model railroad ballast, static grass, and tufts/clumps. Tweak the amounts and colors based on geography or climate.

Trying to blend in on DF city street and castle tiles is a different story.

These are a work in progress, for both painting and sculpting. I’m using an air drying clay, since any oven baked material is a no go. Could use GS, but this clay is pretty cheap, and requires no mixing.

Image

Rough first drafts just to see how the material holds up once dried and painted. Didn’t want to spend a ton of time on the sculpting side if material wasn’t going to work.

I’m really liking how the rock is looking.

Gong to let them sit for a day or two and then bang on the bases, sorta rattle them aroun, and see if clay stays put.

Then it’s off to the races...

(The three grey based figs above are an experiment using celluclay. Still drying so TBD on results.)
