Erinthor Mountains paint scheme

Post by astolat » Sat Jun 24, 2017 12:01 pm

After seven different attempts :P I think I have found close to my paint scheme, would love suggestions. These photos are of the same piece:

Method:
Base mostly in cardboard with a few chunks in a mix of 5:2 base wood and lava orange
Wash with Golden High Flow Acrylics raw umber slightly diluted with water
Drybrush with cardboard + stone edge drybrush + tiny touch of Golden Acrylics transparent red iron oxide
Add splotches of red iron oxide diluted with water
Final drybrush with stone edge drybrush
Moss done with shallow water seaweed green and drybrush of moss green + stone edge drybrush

I'm not 100% sure about the base wood + lava orange bits, they are coming out a bit pink (not as pink as they appear in the photo but not quite the shade I wanted. I was roughly inspired by this:

Looks totally awesome, friend! If I can match relatively close to your paint scheme, then it should match just about perfectly with my own handpainted KS2 caverns.

Berny, the core of it was basing thoroughly in cardboard and then the raw umber wash--it turns the overall tone to brown rather than grey. The golden high flow are really nice for washing but there has to be an actual paint layer underneath for them to grip in the recesses, otherwise they bead up on the dwarvenite. (No tackiness afterwards though.)

Awesome; thanks for posting these. I started following the directions in the painting guide for a handful of pieces and decided that it just looks too flat. Yours are fantastic, really lively. I'm looking forward to going back and working with these to get them nice and interesting.

I like the natural warmth of these pieces...nicely done!

Thanks for the tips. I don't use Pokorny paints, though. I use artist's acrylic, Golden Acrylics to be precise. I always do my own mixing, so I'll have to experiment. I might have to figure out a decent "splotch" technique to get a distinctly random base of grey and stone/dirt brown.

I'm about to paint the last bits of my mountains and it occurred to me, would anyone be interested in a video? I have a tripod and a phone so could do it pretty easily if anyone would find it useful and/or interesting.
