Nice examples. Just what I was looking for. Yes, would love to know how you got the effects also.

I've had really cool results from using liquitex heavy gloss gel medium mixed with Vallejo Game Inks -- you can create a thick translucent texture.

I used some Liquitex iridescent paint additive with Game Color somber grey (darkened with black for shading and lightened with bleached linen for highlights) that gave a pretty nice effect. I can try to take a picture later tonight if interested.

How do you paint that in three dimensions?

The moon is always half in light, half in shadow. The phases of the moon are the result of our fixed perspective. A painted mini will likely be viewed from many angles, likely several at a time.

Moon phases between new and full. You do not really need either of those, as you can use on/off standard paints for them.

Full -- Heavy waxing -- light waxing -- light waning -- heavy waning -- new?

I don't know if you call this "standard" or "nonstandard". Elemental themes.

A large palantir?

You could paint all of it in a reflective paint except a small eyehole and try to make a beam of light like a spotlight. You'd just cover up the reflective paint with something more decorative like a world map, eyeball, neutral color, etc. It would be like a bullseye lantern.

And if you are feeling really ambitious....

Faces. Imprisoned demons, souls of the damned, grinning imps, whatever, but lots of them.

Or one big face.

Beach ball on a pedestal of water.

Silver burnish for reflective mirror ball. Swirled multicolor pedestal in neon colors. For the wizard’s “private sanctum”.

Eyeball. (Bloodshot?) Pedestal painted to resemble red muscle and gray nerves.

Globe. Earth, moon, fantasy world, whatever. Pedestal of fluffy white cloud, or dark stormy cloud (with neon blue wash for internal lightning?).

Baseball. Futbol. Basketball. Volleyball. Billiard ball(s).

Death Star.
