We have generally 4-6 players who HATE cramped spaces. They will also frequently have animal companions, summoned monsters and tactical spell effects (like burning sphere, spiritual weapon etc.).

I also find that with my experienced and savvy players, if I just throw one big monster at them they tear through it in about 2-3 rounds (although it is easier to run). So I build most of my encounters with lots of mooks, although I try to vary them. This was the third and final level of a hidden Yuan Ti Temple (Tower with human cultists, then 3 dungeon levels below - 1st level had purebloods, 2nd level malisons, etc.). This was the 3rd level. The entry chamber was guarded by 3 yuanti broodguard (from Xanthars Guide) and 3 yuan ti malisons (1 of each type).

The final chamber was the final boss encounter: a Yuan Ti abomination armed with a flame tongue scimitar and bracers of defense, surrounded by 9 giant poisonous snakes.

It’s a shame I didn’t have the new jade pieces from the Dungeon of Doom, but I’m hoping we get them in link in with this campaign. The overarching plot line is the yuan-Ti are trying to collect several artifacts which will enable them to summon Sysuul to this plane. The adventurers are in a race with the yuan Ti to collect the artifacts first.

Next week I’m going to try to adapt The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan to the campaign. We’ll see how it goes. My players aren’t fond of how lethal 1st edition-style adventures can be, I’m using the module updated to 5th edition in Tales from the Yawning Portal.

You are right though, I may try building tighter and see how it influences their tactics. The Tamoachan module looks like it has smaller rooms. We will see what happens.

Sorry my players were in mid battle so I’ll just took a quick aerial shot.
Nice build. How big is your typical party? This seems wide open for mega battles. I usually build quite tight with the average room/cave being less than 12x12. I will be able to change that when KSV arrives but I am a bit concerned how it will change our style of play. At the moment standing back and blasting away is rarely an option.

Today’s game: The Shrine of the Abomination!
Cool :)

Loving the brazier action.

Quick aside: your use of 'Abomination' reminds me when my 9yo daughter was making creatures in the computer game Spore. She was proud of her latest creation and called her 15yo brother over to see it.
'Its an abomination!' he exclaimed 'Good Job'

One further note: my gaming group is extremely combat oriented (I.e. bloodthirsty mercenaries, every last one of them) and do very little role playing. They also hate traps, puzzles, stealth, dialogue etc. So our games are mostly battles, and I try to give them enough space to run around and slaughter minions. It keeps them happy....

I meant to say that picture shows 4 boards in play, each 2 x2.

I ordered 16 terrain trays from DoD which should cover the same area with more flexibility.

Hi. One of our players who worked for a sign shop made those. Those are 2x2 squares with 1 inch grid. We typically lay out 1, or up to 4 as needed and use the spares to swap scenes.

I bought 4 folding tables at Wal Mart that we’re a perfect 3x3, which together makes a 6x6 table. The boards make a 4 x 4 play area with 1’ around the sides for character sheets, dice, drinks etc. We seat 4-6 players (2 per side) with the DM in one side.

It’s worked pretty well, but the table is a little high to see over the “walls” of the dwarvenite. So we’re thinking of getting something lower or sawing the legs shorter on the tables.

Each square appears to be one inch on his table. So.... :squints at screen: ...it's uhh... ...big.
