I just want to chime in with my own personal opinion. Caverns generally don't have 2 sided walls the way dungeons do. Back fills don't make sense for a cavern since they would actually be solid stone. The back side of a wall is only sculpted to make the whole piece look more visually interesting. If DF sculpted the corners as a solid 2" the pieces would be too thick to produce at a price most of the backers could afford. I personally don't want to see back fill pieces that would take away piece count slots for more interesting pieces. I can understand why some of you want to utilize both sides of a cavern wall to save on table space, but visually I think the negative, unused space makes a more realistic build. Again, this is my personal opinion on the matter.
I would agree completely but I often play games that require both sides be used.

The free standing curve is one solution. I need some LED torches on the out side curved dungeon and cave 2" by 2"s. I agree that it would take up slots for more interesting tiles. I will convert my own. I know you can't say anything but I would like to believe that there are some more interesting tiles in the works.

I like the suggestion of an insert (like behind the curved or diagonal dungeon walls). Shape the piece(s) to make it a backfill or it could double as a chasm piece.

Making chasm pieces for the back side gives us two options.

1) Gives more interesting chasm shapes

2) Allows us to use the main piece "backwards" while giving the floor continuity.

Let's use the narrow passage end cap piece as an example... if i want the curve to intrude into a large cavern (not use the piece as a tunnel end cap but as an internal convex curved wall) i will have gaps in the floor. Make the backfill be one or two pieces and we will also use them as chasm pieces.

Just my two bits.

I want pieces to be usable from both sides. 2x2 footprints is best, wherthere as a whole tile or chasm type additional piece.
