I've been very happy with it in any of the three options:
1) No light
2) On a budget light panel I bought to simulate the things I have coming with hellscape (bottom panel removed from DF piece)
3) With the bottom panel on, and using the stock LEDs. The LEDs are bright/strong enough that most colors still come through -- the blue/green tint tends to darken reds/oranges rather than going brown. But I did leave the large crystals uncolored so that show true color in that case. I suspect 1&3 are my primary modes of us anyway.
Very cool. I think I'll go with a light Golden Interference Violet, Blue and Reds - something along those lines so the crystals still look good with no light as you're describing with option 1, and then hopefully it will work well with the stock LEDs also.

I'm telling you, you can do it with just Pokorny Black and Earth Stone.
I tried this last night and it worked really well. I also appreciate Erin's formula but think I'll stick with the black and Earth Stone since it uses less paint.

The large corner is an LED piece, so I'm not sure what you're asking.
Ahh, I see now! It didn't register for me at first - my apologies!

How effective is the light through the crystal on that corner piece?

Here's some photos of how my (ice) stuff is coming out: (including a factory ice piece for comparison)
crystal-ice-large-corner.jpg
This one is basically done. I'd like to go in and do some minor touchups, and need to be more careful on the later ones, it feels more 'smooth' than regular cavern pieces so the final dry brush can become too heavy very easily.

Showing some of the pieces with the white under base coat/transparent paints, beginning to put on the actual base coat.

crystal-ice-free.jpg
Two attempts (too heavy) at transparent + shimmer on the free standing clusters

crystal-ice-circle.jpg
Another 'finished' piece, but one that doesn't have transparent media for the bulk of it.
These are very helpful, thanks!

Are you planning to use a similar scheme on the LED crystal pieces?

I messaged DF and they confirmed they used the Golden Interference colors. I asked if they could give me specifics and I'll post what they say here when they respond.

I also have some of Reaper's clear colors but early experiments with those indicate they would require a lot of thinning and I'm not sure if they'll look good at that stage. Will post results when I play with them more.

Thanks also everyone for the base color formula! I'll try both and see which one works best.

I'm sure. I was just sharing how Erin at DF does it.

From one of the painting vids (Jade Temple I think), here is Erin's formula to match the base Dwarvenite dark grey using Pokorny Paints:

1/3 Base Grey
1/3 Black
1/9 School Bus
1/9 Earth Stone
1/9 Deep Lava
Thanks for this! This will definitely come in handy with some stuff I'm 3D printing soon!

Hey, it's not that hard to mix up a batch big enough to cover A LOT of tiles. Most of us have some form of measuring cup style instruments in the kitchen to use, and all you need after that is a bottle to put it in.
