I have used both the 12x12s and the 4x8s a lot in my DOD builds. The 4x8s are great for smaller add on rooms, halls, etc. Frequently they fit in a spot another 12x12 would not. In addition to all the other things already mentioned. I went really heavy on the water/stone TTs in both sizes. In KS6, in addition to what comes with DCD, I added on 3x Forest TT packs (6 12x12s), 2x quicksand/cave stone (looks amazing in the recent pics) TT multi-packs, 2 additional 12x12 quicksand/cave stone TTs, 2 Ice TT multi-packs.

I ended up with a mix of all varieties in 12x12 and 6x6 by buying those multi-packs. For 4x8, I've only got the ones that came with the Adventure Packs 1-11 and am missing at least one style. I think I can live with this mix.

Speaking of smaller terrain trays, has anyone else noticed that these two are hard to obtain?

- Crystalline 4x8
- Necrotic 4x8
Totally agree.

I ended up not taking the 12x12 just because I can't spread them in case I need to do some nearby smaller ponds, or a river of sorts. The Underdoom trays pack is just too huge.

That was just my reasoning in KS V, I only took one tray package, the acid one, and I took the 3 trays size 4x8. And now I'm considering taking another if it goes back to stock again.

I would have taken at least one pack of necrotic sludge and another for the festering floor (more than the crystalline) if they had offered 4x8 in one pack. that way you can create a big chamber flooded, or a big lake, but also a river, several ponds spread in an irregular shape, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I get why the 12x12 exists, if you are planning on going big they feel more organic, but still.

Greetings!

Alternatively, I just live with the 6x6 hazards terrain trays packs...maybe DF is trying to tell us they're more useful by offering that as a multi-pack and not the 4x8s...?

Speaking of smaller terrain trays, has anyone else noticed that these two are hard to obtain?

- Crystalline 4x8
- Necrotic 4x8

My current test pledge is an AE1-11 + Ice + Crystal + Dreadhollow. I'm trying to snipe in as many unique packs (e.g. driftstones, forest banks, etc.) to get as many unique pieces without actually pledging for Underdoom or DCD (since budget won't allow and still let me get all I want - plus storage limits).

I see that I can pick up necrotic 4x8 in the Underdoom terrain tray pack, but that's way more necrotic trays than I think I need or want (current pledge already includes one 12x12).

Crystalline 4x8 appears to only be available in Enc. 7 Core Pack, which is just strange to me.

Any tips on how to pick these up that I'm missing? Any chance we can get DF to add a 4x8 variety pack of terrain trays or otherwise make them more available via terrain tray add-ons?

I would agree with elevated areas, plus cheaper for things like rivers. If the river is only 2-3 squares wide then a 4x8 is much cheaper to make that river.
Or a little pond, bottomless pit, etc.

Also for smaller multiple terrain types close to each other in a build. If you need water and lava close to each other, 12x12 makes it hard to make work because the trays overlap.

I did not think about elevation. That makes perfect sense.
