I can see that - I am likely also going to go in for some smaller pieces for Axe N Shield, but was debating whether I would attempt to setup my own larger layer cake setups with plexiglass. I'm not sure about how helpful the layers would be in play - they are certainly impressive to look at.

I was thinking about getting a couple big plexiglass sheets to do layer cake builds - what thickness do you think is minimum to support its own weight with a reasonable amount of supports? I am leaning away from the Axe N Shield solutions for such at this time and doing my own thing. Thanks.
My sheets are 1/4" thick, but they are also large ~3x4 and as such rather inconvenient for a smaller feature, which is why I am sticking with a modest AxeNShield buy. I do not have any "elegant" way to support the higher tiers at this point, hence the cardboard boxes. For sure they are cheap, but they also completely block actual sights lines if you want players to be able to see under the top tier.

I do not know. I have read 1/4 inch. I have no experience with using ]clear layer cake. I find that layer cake style builds take more play space than I have. You have to have a place to put the layers during play. My game room is too small for more than one table.

If you build something like Invincible Overlords table, you should not have the same problem.

You can also see the plexiglass sheet I was using for the necro complex, sitting on some USPS Priority Mail boxes I folded up for this setting.

(I had an area under the plexiglass sheet where the water flowed down and into the center of the ruined fort that could also be examined. That was the stream in the middle of the fort. I would lift off the entire upper complex in one move (with some help) to reveal that later.)

Having a large 5'x10' table setting lets me create these large settings, which I enjoy. It also lets the play flow without any real interruption once we begin the session since I don't have to break anything down or build it up.

The Necromancer attached to that orc brigade had been very very busy creating his new troops in the old mountain complex. There were lots of source material from the nearby battles. I have a lot of undead minis...

Here are some more shots I found of a later version of that ruined fort (and complex in the mountain behind it.

Yeah RB, picture three is the kind of place you might come across in the wilderness that was abandoned or destroyed a long time ago. From a gaming perspective, lots of cover and hiding places, and makes for a more interesting encounter than an open field or plain woods.
