KS6.66 - BACK COMPATABILITY

Post by JenneyOC » Wed Jun 19, 2019 1:28 am

Q: Where are the pictures of the new pieces next to the KS2 Lava pieces?

A: Tobi held up a compatibility build with KS2 Lava pieces during the launch live feed, and he is in the process of shooting some photos for us to post for you to better show the pieces next to KS2 lava and even old school resin DoE:Hellscape.

-----

Q: Is the floor color compatible with a standard Cavern’s Deep floor?
A: No. It is a bit darker, so it not the same color scheme. You can always use them together, but they are not meant to be the same.

-----

Q: Is the Hellgate compatible with the castle gate?
A: Yes there is a lot of fun compatibility with the castle pieces. When we do the walk-through video for it we will show a lot of the fun ways the pieces work together.

Q: What’s the best way to put a lava river (using the new lava river tiles) in a regular cavern? Do I need special floor pieces with a transition paint scheme?

A: One great way to integrate lava river tiles with regular caverns is by using the banks pieces (available both in this KS and as part of KS6). Banks with either the lava or the caverns paint scheme will work for this.

To do a lava river using Caverns banks, first lay out your lava river tiles and surround them with a few flat lava floor pieces. Then, build the surrounding cavern area one floor tile higher (using extra floors and/or our new foamcore risers underneath) and transition down onto the lava area using the Caverns banks. This creates the effect of a "lava rift" in the cavern floor.

Alternately, build a wide flat Cavern floor. Then build your lava river on top of it, and use lava-painted paints around it to transition down on to the regular cavern area. This creates the effect of a lava flow that has run out across the cavern. (This method also works if you want to build on top of our new light panels... lay out the light panels, place caverns floors around them, and then cover the panels with lava river tiles and lava banks.)

-----

Q: What are the different lava river transition pieces for? Which works with the old KS2 lava rivers and which works with the new KS6.66 magma rivers?

A: The transition pieces allow you to transition between three kinds of terrain: the old KS2 lava rivers, the new KS6.66 magma rivers, and negative space (terrain trays or phantasmal filters/light panels).
We're calling the new molten rivers "magma rivers" to distinguish them from the older (KS2) "lava rivers."
There are three different transition pieces: pg. 4 of the piece grimoire shows the "Water Caverns Transition - Lava" and the "Magma River to KS2 Lava River Transition." The former transitions from KS2 lava rivers to negative space lava (terrain trays or lava phantasmal filter). The latter transitions from KS6.66 magma rivers to KS2 lava rivers.
Then there's the Magma River Transition (Grimoire pg. 6). This gets you from magma rivers to negative space (lava terrain tray or lava phantasmal filter). This is the only kind you'd need if you don't have KS2 lava rivers.

Q: Would be really nice if the KS6 pieces which are here available in the lava paint scheme would also be available in the cavern painted and unpainted gray dwarvennite.

A: any KS6 pieces you want in Caverns Grey paint or Dungeon Grey unpainted, they’ll be available in the webstore after KS6 rewards ship to backers. No need to wait until Hellscape ships to get those!

Q: Have you or can you show what it would be like to use these DF panels underneath the Crystal Caverns which have all those crystals which are clear dwarvenite. And also within the ice cave under the ice walls

A: yes this will be in an upcoming video… we don’t have any clear crystal caverns currently as someone took them to iceland. Crystal caverns have a battery cover on the bottom, so they aren’t very translucent through the bottom. Some pieces might look great, others not so much.

Q: pics of the lava river next to KS6 tiles?
A: This will be in the upcoming compatibility video. Stay tuned.

Q: Are there any pictures/scenes available which show the old resin hellscape terrain with this new dwarvenite tiles? Are they easy to combine (wrt sizing as well as considering paint)?

A: there are a couple kicking around on the forums, but short answer - the resin Hellscape is much lighter than these new Lava Caverns. I think it’s fair to say the resin pieces stand apart as their own thing.
You could use them for a cooler chamber connected to the same Cavern complex, or have the newer Lava pieces erupting over the older rock flows, much like Tobi did with Lava/Erinthor in last night’s update.
But they’re not close enough that you’d want to alternate resin DoE Hellscape and new Lava in the same room, in most cases.

-----

Q: Can you comment on the change in paint scheme from the KS2 pieces to the KS6.66 piece. The walls on the new paint scheme are more brown like the traditional caverns as oppose to the original fully charred look of the KS2 lava pieces. I don’t like the new paint scheme, why did you choose to change it and make the pieces not compatible?

A: we've done a number of compatibility shots showing KS2 pieces with the new lava. We were very conscious of the original lava set while working out the new design, seeking to improve upon it while still maintaining compatibility. While they don't match exactly, most feel that they can integrate well together. The floors certainly play nicely together, and if you find the variation in the walls jarring you could use them in adjacent sections to represent areas that are more or less charred.

As for why we changed things... We are always striving to make the best terrain possible, and we were never entirely happy with the original lava set; it was simply a repaint of the Caverns set, and we wanted to design a lava set from the ground up (or the magma up) to really capture the feel of a molten underground environment. We spent quite a while studying real lava flows, volcanic caves, etc. Some kinds of real-life lava caves (e.g. "lava tubes") are actually pretty boring looking, and also we wanted these new sets to connect naturally with our (natural limestone)Caverns sets, so we settled on a design in which the lava is forcing its way up from beneath in a limestone Cavern. Thus the walls are designed and painted to echo our regular limestone caverns, while the floors are sculpted and painted (and lit from beneath) to capture the feel of the encroaching magma. The overall effect is more realistic and, we think, also makes the pieces integrate better with our regular Caverns as well as working with older lava pieces.

Q: It would be cool to see some transition pieces between the hellscape and the dread hollow forest. Burned trees and stuff.

A: (Jeff) I think that will probably have to wait until Wildlands, eh?
In the meantime, you could always go for verisimilitude and take a propane torch to some pieces.

I AM KIDDING do not burn your Dwarvenite. It would probably smell terrible, and burning it might let the souls escape.
