4x4 also gives more flexibility. You can still make an 8x8 square using 4 4x4 tiles. But you can't make an L-shaped room of the same area with a single 8x8 tile.

Agreed - looks to me like 5 4x4 tiles.

These look so cool, I may have to go in a little bigger than planned when CD hits the web store...

Looking at the "mostly lava" tile, I was seeing 6x6 squares, but the tile next to it does appear to have 4 clearly defined squares along the edge, so I think you're right.

As cool as the larger features allowed by 6x6 tiles are (Dreadhollow), I'm glad it appears they'll stick with 4x4 for these since it will work better with Erinthor and underground. :)

I would think they would stick with 4x4 for anything likely to be underground, so that they can match up easier with all the previous dungeon and cavern tiles.
Larger rooms work better with miniatures. ;)
But what does that have to do with tile size? You can make big rooms with smaller tiles, you just use more of them. It's not like larger tiles will be the same price as smaller ones...
Larger tiles lower cost. One 4" by 4" requires one mold.
2" by 2" would require 4 different molds for the same area unless they are all the same tile.
The large trees require larger tiles.
Lava/rivers/roads look better on larger tiles.

I have more than enough 2"by 2"s. I like to use 8" by 8"s when I can. Large tiles are easy. I have become very fond of the tabbed walls as well. They take less space during transport and storage. Three 8"by 8"s or forty two 2"by 2"s, which do you think might be easier?

I made some 3" by 3" floor tiles for the tabbed walls. I discovered I need some 1/2" tab walls too. I have been thinking some half height tabbed stone walls would be useful with the new woodland tiles to use as low walls.Hedges could be made in this still as well.I will try to make time for some photos tonight.

I would also guess they are 4x4.

You can see the subliminal "squares" if you look closely, and in the middle of the piece there is a break, signifying 2 squares on one side and 2 on the other. If the piece were 3x3, the middle of the piece would have a square set in the middle.
