I love this idea!
You may want to incorporate using sanity or constitution checks with each encounter, secretly increasing the DC by +2 with each successive save, to imitate the heroes slowly succumbing to whatever evil forces are threatening to consume them.

I live in Tacoma Washington and started playing with the D&D Basic Set in 1982 in 7th grade.

My first character was a ranger and I remember being super disappointed at first because my PC didn't use a machine gun (I had yet to read LOTR).
