General Painting Tips

For the very best results painting your Game Tiles, we recommend:

1) Watch our basic painting tutorials. These early videos featuring Stefan demonstrate some basic techniques that apply to all our sets. Then checkout our Joy of Dwarven Painting series for guides on specific sets and more advanced techniques.

2) Buy quality paints and brushes.

Important: some paints do not work well with Dwarvenite, they can develop a slightly tacky or sticky finish. While this is not a reflection of the quality of this paint, we recommend against using these brands to paint Dwarvenite. We have tested a number of popular brands.  Please see the chart below.

Pokorny Artist Colours: Of course, we recommend our own paint. Stefan created the colors especially for Game Tiles and formulated the viscosity for painting Dwarvenite – no primer required. 

Primer: If you’re going to prime your pieces, Army Painter Spray seemed to be the only primer we found that actually works well with Dwarvenite. There may be others out there.

Brushes: We recommend natural hair brushes – not synthetics -- for Dwarvenite. Click here for a paint brush set available in our store.

3) Test methodically. We urge you to test your technique, and color mixes, and review your dry finish carefully on just a few pieces before you apply paint to the bulk of your pieces.
